Everyday versus Good

posted Wed, 07/20/05

A little bit too much excitement yesterday - P's mom went to the emergency room for heat exhaustion.  It sounds like she will be alright, but the heat and humidity of Central Virginia were not kind.

Knit Night was last night, and more knitters showed up!  Four women from a beginning knitting class at our LYS and their teacher were new additions.  Some of the photos didn't come out quite so well, so I won't post all of them.

from l to r: Rebecca, knitter from our LYS (I can be terrible with names), Jeannie, and Noelle.

And a very fuzzy photo of me and jenny:

please disregard my roll.  I should have sat up straight.

Wedding planning continues. Sample menus are coming my way, and I am registering for gifts. I have been very torn about getting 'everyday' and 'good' china. I love the idea of having 'good stuff' to use on holidays, but I don't like the idea of having to pack and move it next summer.

Since I had a fairly established kitchen before I moved in with P., I don't need many of the things brides register for. Cuisinart? Got it. KitchenAid mixer? Xmas present from P.  We have two toasters, a bread making machine (P.'s), a blender (mine), and a salad spinner (mine).  So my registry list is significantly shorter than many of my friends' have been.

So, all you Marrieds - do you have 'everyday' and 'good' china? Do you use your good stuff, or does it sit on the top shelf of the linen closet gathering dust?

The good dishes are packed in a box in my basement. So there you have it. I have Fiesta ware for my everyday. Love it! I am not a fancy person. My, you are a busy blogger! Gotta go.

We have three sets - two everydays and one fine china. The china is in the china cabinet I inherited from my grandmother and we usually use it once a year for thanksgiving. I'll also be inheriting another set of china and everyday someday as well.

I went back and forth on whether or not we should register for good stuff since I know we'll be getting another set and we're not very formal people anyway but I decided to go ahead and get my own set.

I had a big girly moment the day I opened the gravy boat in my china. A big dorky girly moment.

I have one set of "everyday" dishes that I registered for when Hub and I got married . . . they are plain white, so go with everything. We figured since we don't entertain with formal china, there was no point . . . I think my mother-in-law still hasn't forgiven me for not choosing formal china. But then, I don't think she's forgiven me for stealing her little boy away, so whatever.

Good stuff? Sitting in the cabinet above the fridge which means you have to stand on a chair to get to it, which means we rarely stand on a chair to get to it, which means we rarely use it. Everyday, has been used everyday for 12 years now. Still going strong.

About the plates- we do have good china and everyday plates. I am the last person in the world who would guy china, but then I realized that I would like to have nice dishes for holidays and fancy dinners, and I would never ever in a bajillion years buy them for myself. We put some extra shelves up in the kitchen so that we would have the china out and in a relatively accessible place, and we use it occasionally. Go ahead and register for it - people like to buy it, and you'll be glad you have it!

I agree- you'll like having "good" china. I have what I registered for when I married and I have my mother's inherited when she died. And her silver. I never built up to a "whole" set of good china or silver because it was during the time '79-'80 when silver was hundreds + of $ an ounce. A 4 pc place setting was $2500.00 -yes, a four piece setting, not 5. China was correspondingly expensive as well. Where are you registering BTW? I haven't read the Wedding section, you probably say there. Duh! :)
